From Frost to Flow

A Sea-Can Inspired Home Renovation

Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Project Type: Whole-Home Renovation
Scope: Exterior Envelope + Interior Design Overhaul

The Challenge

Nestled in a quiet, mature neighbourhood along Edmonton’s river valley, our home was full of character—but it was struggling against the elements. Frost-covered walls, ice-laden windows, drafty doors, and outdated finishes were turning winters into a battle against the cold. Beyond the functional issues, the home lacked cohesion and modern flow—both inside and out.

The Vision

My wife and I have always dreamed of building a custom sea-can home—a bold, modern structure rooted in clean lines and clever use of space. For this renovation, we wanted to bring that vision to life while honouring the natural setting. Outside, we imagined a striking, industrial-inspired silhouette that stood in contrast to the lush greenery, with bright, inviting details. Inside, our goal was a bright, open, multi-level layout, full of cozy corners and creative transitions that allowed the home to breathe and flow.

The Solution

We reimagined the envelope of the home with a mix of steel-clad and Lux siding, selected for its durability and sleek aesthetic. Behind the surface, we installed 3 inches of foam insulation with a weatherproof barrier, creating a tight thermal shell to keep warmth in and winter out. We installed high-quality, triple-pane windows and new doors at every entrance. Finally, we built drywall returns and painted every space for a minimalist look and feel —ensuring each room flowed effortlessly into the next.

Collaboration in Craftsmanship

This renovation was a deeply personal project, brought to life through tight coordination with trusted trades and design professionals. Every decision—from material choice to layout refinements—was a balance of aesthetic, performance, and heart. It was a true collaboration, where every detail was deliberate and every angle had purpose.

The Result

The final result — a striking modern home that reflected our dream while respecting its surroundings. Warm, efficient, and filled with light—it was a sanctuary in the city.

From frosty nights to cozy mornings, this sea-can-inspired home now stands as a bold, beautiful expression of who we are.
